The Relaxing City of Malmo, Sweden

Yohanna, an intern at CasaVersa Home Exchange, tells about her experiences in the relaxing city of Malmo, Sweden.

During my travels in Scandanaiva, I was lucky enough to visit the city of Malmo in Sweden. The city is only 20 minutes from Copenhagen in the South of Sweden.

With its long beaches, old medieval houses and the green spaces, the third largest city of Sweden is full of contrasts in a green atmosphere.

Here are five areas to explore in this lovely small city.

1. The old city by bicycle

Malmo has 300 000 inhabitants, and most of them get around only by bicycle. In the Nordic area, most of people bike: it’s healthy, eco-friendly and great exercise. This is a perfect example of the Swedish way of life. Malmo has around 400km of biking area, a cycler’s paradise!

After touring the old city by bicycle, I suggest a walk to Lilla Torg, a place filled with beautiful houses that always has something new going on .To finish, head in the direction of Slottsträdgarden, Malmö’s Castle Garden, which is a fully organic garden with a numer of themes, including a Japanese garden, a climbing garden and a rose garden.

2. Malmo’s museums

Moderna Museet

Malmo has some great museums - you can explore the Natural museum, or the Museum of Art which are located in the Renaissance castle ‘’Malmohus’. If you are a fan of modern art, the Malmo Konsthall along with the Moderna Museet both have excellent collections.

Museum lovers will be very satisfied with the quality and variety of museums and certainly wont be at a loss as to what to do. They are also handy places to visits in case of bad weather.

4. Vastra Hamnen, the Western Harbour: a green paradise

The Western Harbour is a sustainable development in a former industrial zone next to the train station. The most stunning building there is ‘Turning Torso’, designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. This building consists of nine cubes nested spiral raises to 190 meters, and is the tallest building in Scandinavia and second highest residential building in Europe.

After that, don’t forget to stop by the impressive Oresund bridge, which has connected Sweden and Denmark since 2010. It is a really peaceful place to reflect on the Swedish way of life.

5. Lund, the medieval and student area

With its medieval past and old buildings, today Lund is a very dynamic university area. Do not miss the beautiful university buildings, such as the Kungshuset or the library.

To finish your tour of Malmo, food is will be high up on your list. Taste the local specialties, which include The Kanelbull, a famous cake with cinnamon. For a delicious stop, visit Hollandia (Sodra Forstadsgatan 8) Möllevångstorget Möllan31.

Immigrants from approximately 200 countries live alongside each other in Malmö and they all come together in Möllevångstorget. Here you can buy spices from Iraq at bargain prices, taste delicious Chinese dumplings and every other kind of international food is available for the delight of your tastebuds. You are sure to find food from your home country there, in case you are craving a taste from home.

Malmo is a relaxing city - everything is close by and easy to do! You won’t feel stressed about anything as it’s a very easy-going place to be: this is the real Nordic way of living!

These are gorgeous Yohanna! That ‘turning torso’ was one of the best architectural designs I’ve seen. The city has preserved its history. I’m listing now Malmo, Sweden in my travel plans!
